Short short stories are hot right now—I’ve been writing and publishing very short fiction for a while on 100 Word Story Anthology—and the current Esquire Magazine features lots of shorts by writers famous for longer work. The writer Josh Weil, known for a break out book of novellas, The New Valley, is a contributor to the mag’s “How To Be A Man.” Josh and I share a connection to the Appalachian Mountains, which is also the landscape of The New Valley. Josh’s short story in Esquire reminds me that the form exists somewhere between poetry and prose, an evocative invitation, a flash of imagery that lingers. Pick up a copy of Esquire and visit the diverse entries on 100 Word Story Anthology to experience the brevity and depth of short short fiction—a form perfect for summer reading.
